Future of SLSA - Brainstorming Thursday Night, November 2nd

The SLSA Neighborhood Reps are having a brainstorming party Thursday night to talk about the future of SLSA and neighborhood cooperation here.  We got the annexation done, what's next?

If you are interested in being a neighborhood representative next year, or in helping with multi-neighborhood projects or problems, let us know.  If you happen to be available in spite of the very short notice, please come and join us!

Enjoy chips and salsa, shrimp, beer and wine, and good company.

Issaquah Parks and Natural Areas Bond:
Would slightly reduce our savings when lower Issaquah tax rates take effect in 2008.

On this November Ballot, we will be asked to vote on the Issaquah Proposition 1: Parks and Natural Areas Bond. This information regarding the park bond has been submitted:

Issaquah Parks and Natural Areas Bond

Our parks and open spaces are a vital part of the Issaquah community and essential to our quality of life.  With its natural beauty, streams, mountains and woods, Issaquah is attracting many new residents.  This election we have an opportunity to preserve some of that natural beauty for future generations as well as to enhance and improve our existing parks and fields.

The Parks and Natural Areas Bond is a well-balanced approach that will provide the resources to increase our park land and improve recreational opportunities.  It will:

  • Preserve new land for protecting our watersheds, creeks, streams and salmon habitats.  It will also allow greater access to public lands by improving our hiking and biking trails.
  • Enhance our existing playgrounds and improve the drainage of sports fields for better utilization.
  • Provide the funds for development of two new city parks: a creek side park near the Downtown area and a neighborhood park in Talus where none now exists.

According to the voters guide, passing this measure will increase property taxes by up to 10.5 cents per $1000 of valuation, or $52.50 a year for a $500.000 house.

However, this would be added on top of Issaquah Property tax rates, not the high King County tax rates that we will continue to pay through 2007 as part of the annexation transition.

As of last year (See Property Tax Savings Details in this August 2005 SLSA Update) we were paying $12.36 per $1000 of valuation in unincorporated King County, compared with $10.18 per $1000 of valuation in the existing Issaquah limits.

As part of the annexation transition process we are continuing to pay the high King County tax rates during 2006 and 2007. If we were already paying Issaquah lower property tax rates, the owner of a $500,000 home would be paying $1000 less per year in property taxes.

If the park measure passes, it will erase $50 of the $1000 per year savings that will begin in 2008 as a result of our annexation to Issaquah.  This is a 5% reduction in the expected property tax savings.

Perhaps not a bad deal for such benefits to the area!
